LECTURE

Lecture 6 : Research Strategy
02/10/18 (Week 6 )

In this week class, we were given a lecture on research strategy which is all about the method we can use to collect the primary data for our research. There are two types of of research methods which are quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative is said to be more systematic as it can be measured while qualitative is more subjective as it obtained from the people's perspective. Other than understanding the research method, we would also need to consider which methods to be adopted, who we should involve in our research as well as when the research will be conducted.

Lecture 8 : Selecting a method of Data Collection
16/10/18 (Week 8)

In the previous class, we learned about the two types research method that we can use to conduct our research. While in this week's class, we got to learn about the various research methods for data collection. There are several methods can be used to collect the data and the choice are depends on the purpose of our research. The data collected are categorised as primary data and secondary data.
Primary data are the information collected from primary sources which include observation, interview as well as questionnaire. In contrast, secondary data are the information gathered through secondary sources such as articles, journals, magazines and books.

INSTRUCTIONS

RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION

Week 8 (16/10/18)
To start off this project, I decided to go through all the references and notes on research methods as well as to list out the possible methods that I could use to conduct my research. Thus, I will have a clearer idea on what I can do to collect the data. In the class, I also got to have a short consultation with Ms Jinchi and I was suggested that I could do email interviews, questionnaire and visual analysis for my data collection.

With the feedback received, I started to plan for my interview and questionnaire questions as well as what to do for visual analysis with more details.

Week 9 (23/10/18)
This week, I got to show my first draft regarding interview and questionnaire questions as well as my plan for visual analysis to Ms Jinchi for some feedbacks. As for suggestions, I was told to use email interview and visual analysis to collect the data. For the interview, my questions were developed with the help of Ms Jinchi and have been finalised. So for now, I would need to find the interviewees that relevant to my research area to participate. While for visual analysis, I'm unsure what I can analyse from the packaging. Thus, I was suggested to find 3 images of packagings to ask about formal qualities, how the design principles work together to inform that the packaging is environment friendly and perhaps also encouraging public to be environment friendly

Week 10 (30/10/18)
In the previous week, all my data collection methods have been finalised. Therefore, I mainly focus on finding the interviewees and planning for visual analysis in this week class. Besides that, I also got to consult with Ms Jinchi on my email request for interview before I sending it out. After finalising everything, I start to send out the email to all the interviewees. So for now, I have to wait their replies for my request, then only I could send out the interview questions.

Week 11 (06/11/18)
Since this week is an E-learning week, we will need to complete the task given remotely from home. We were told to compile all the research methods that we will be conducting to collect the data into slides as well as to update the blog before the next class. So, here is the final compilation of my slides below.

While waiting the response from the interviewees, I proceed to conduct my research with visual analysis by listing out my observations and analysis on sustainable packaging with some explanations.

Week 12 (13/11/18)
In this week class, we were told that we have to gather the data by the end of next week. For the questionnaire, we could start analysing the data collected if the amount of responses reached 50. When analysing, we would need to think what we can interpret from the collected data to connect with the information. As for the face to face interview, we have to transcript what the interviewees said.

For my email interview, I didn't manage to receive any responses from the interviewees. Hence, I decided to proceed my research with online questionnaire. In the class, I got to show Ms. Jinchi the questions that I have planned for questionnaire as well as to get some feedbacks from her. After finalising all the questions, I was told to prepare the Google Form and send it out by today as the data need to collected by the end of next week. While for the visual analysis, I will need to elaborate the explanations and analysis of my observations in more details. Other than that, I also have to think on how the design principles work to inform and encourage the consumer to be environmental friendly instead of just describing the principles applied.

Week 13 (20/11/18)
We did not have class this week as it is a public holiday. Hence, we got to work remotely from home and the class will go online as the replacement. We were told to update the blog with the latest information for our data collection and data analysis.

For me, I continue to work on the visual analysis and start analysing the data with the response I got. As I started the online questionnaire late, I only manage to get 55 responses. So, I have to continue to get more responses. Here is my updated slides for data collection and data analysis below.

Week 14 (27/11/18)
This week, I have gotten sufficient amount of responses for my questionnaire. Thus, I proceed to analyse them and updated my slides for design research implementation. Moving on from that, I also got to do one more visual analysis on the sustainable packaging.

Here is the final outcome of my slides for data collection and data analysis below.

FEEDBACK

Week 8 : For the research method, Ms Jinchi suggested that I could conduct the email interview with the experts in packaging design industry to hear their perspectives and point of view as well as to carry out an online questionnaire to study on their knowledge and familiarity regarding sustainable packaging. She also encouraged me to collect the data with visual analysis which I was required to make observations on different packagings and analyse them.

Week 9 : For the data collection method, Ms Jinchi said that email interview and visual analysis would be enough for me to conduct the research. Thus, I would not need to conduct the research with online questionnaire. Moreover, I was told to start looking for the interviewees that relevant to my research area to participate. While for visual analysis, I was suggested to chose 3 images of packagings and ask about formal qualities, how the design principles work together to inform that the packaging is environment friendly and perhaps also encouraging public to be environment friendly

Week 10 : Ms Jinchi help me to look through the email request that I have done. After finalising everything, she told me to start sending out the email to the participants. As to gain more response back, I was told to send out more emails.

Week 11 : No feedbacks were given since this week is an E-learning week.

Week 12 : Since I didn't receive any responses from the interviewees, I have to add another research method to collect the data which is online questionnaire. Ms Jinchi went through the questions for my questionnaire as well as to help me in developing the questions. After finalising the questions, I was then asked to prepare the survey form and send it out by today. For the visual analysis, it is good that I have listed out some of my observations. As for now, I will need to elaborate  the point that I have listed out in more details.

Week 13 : No feedbacks were given since this week is a public holiday.

Week 14 : No feedbacks were given since this week class has been cancelled.
