LECTURE
Lecture 10 : No lecture ( Public Holiday )
29/05/18 (Week 10)
There was no class this week due to public holiday but Mr Vinod have posted a message at Facebook group. We were told to write 150 words on one thing that we love as well as 150 words on one thing that we hate and this will be a part of our final project. For example, it can be a person that we love and another that we hate, it could be a behaviour that we love and one that we hate, it could also be a food item that we love and one that we hate and so on. We were also told to format the text adhering to the tone of the written information on two A4 pages in a square of 200 x 200 mm with 0.5pt stroke width outline.
Instruction for the task :
1. Set a margin. Create columns and rows.
2. Choose an appropriate typeface from the 10 given (for love and hate respectively).
3. Format the text while considering the point size, line length, alignment, ragging and tracking.
4. Save as PDF, upload to Google drive and embedded it. Post to e-portfolio as well.
5. Print out on A4 and bring to the next class.
Lecture 12 : No lecture ( Raya Holiday )
12/06/18 (Week 12)
We did not have class this week since it was a Raya holiday. However, the class still conducted remotely through online. Mr Vinod have posted instructions at Facebook group and we were given task for our final project. Previously, we were told to write 150 words on something that we love and something that we hate. This week, we need to come up with a short title for both of the texts and sketch 3 possible ways of expressing the title. All 3 options are to be sketched on an A4 paper and then upload the image of sketches to our e-portfolio.
Lecture 13 : No lecture ( Final Project )
19/06/18 (Week 13)
This week, Mr Vinod began the class by giving us some general feedbacks. We were told to make changes for the title of our final project if we named it as project 3. Besides that, he also remind us to update our further reading at e-portfolio weekly as it is counted as our research and mark is given for that. For the final outcome of our artwork, we were told that the artwork cannot be a screenshot. It has to be JPEG instead of PNG. We also need to consider the space leaving around the artwork as we should understand that it is important to know how to present our artwork well. Then, we moved on to work with our final project. Mr Vinod explained to us again what we we actually doing for our final project as some of us may not clear about it because the task was given remotely. This project is basically the time for us to apply all the things we learned through the exercises as well as the project in an artwork. Previously, we had complete the writing for love and hate and come out with a title to express it. Now, we were given a new task which we need to sketch the idea for the layout and then done it digitally using Adobe InDesign.
23/06/18 (Week 13)
We were having an extra class in the same week to proceed on our final project. Mr Vinod had check and gave some comments on our works so that we can improve our works before submitting. Before the class end, we were also told to buy a frame that fit our artwork and frame it.
Lecture 14 : No lecture ( Final Project & E-portfolio)
26/06/18 (Week 14)
This week was the last week for semester 1 and it came to the end of this course. We did not have any lecture today but we need to complete and submit the final project as well as our e-portfolio.
INSTRUCTIONS
FINAL PROJECT
Event Typography (Week 10 - Week14 )
Week 10 (29/05/18)
We don't have class this week since it was a public holiday. However, we were told to complete the task on writing 150 words on one thing that we love and 150 words on one thing that we hate at home. The format was given and we have to complete the task by following it. After we writing, we were told to print it out as well as to embed it and upload to e-portfolio.
WHAT I LOVE :
I love photography, as in, I enjoy capturing every moment and the beauty that surrounds me. Focusing on shooting helps me forget all my worries and stress. There is nothing more satisfying that than getting perfect shot and being able to store what I saw as a memory. While shooting, I notice that I am able to to observe the world in more details. Whenever I go out, I observe the lighting, colour and design off the place in order to take a good shot.
Besides that, photography also changes the way I look at the world. I look at things in different perspectives and angles when I take a photograph. I take shots at any place and any time to capture parts of my life. I really like to take pictures when I travel, when I’m on a journey with my family visiting man beautiful places in different countries. For me, photography is the process of capturing the best moments of my life.
WHAT I HATE :
I hate videography in comparison to photography because I have to focus more on actions which I don’t really like to do. Focusing on actions is more time consuming since it takes a lot of time to get the perfect scene. I would need to shoot longer since sometimes the effect and action does not meet the expectations and needs to be retaken. I also have to retake the same scene many times because I won’t know which one will work for the video. I’m not interested this because I consider myself as someone who will get bored if I have to keep repeating the same thing.
Other than that, videography comes with the extra concerns of audio, content, camera movement and scene capturing. To have a high quality video, I need to consider editing the video which is more complicated than photography. For me, videography is complicated and I don’t like that.

Week 12 (12/06/18)
In previous week, we were given a task to write 150 words on what we love and what we hate. This week, we were required to come up with a short title for both of the texts we wrote. Then, come up with 3 sketches to express the title. All the sketches need to be done on an A4 paper and later on upload the image of the sketches to our e-portfolio.

This week, we continue to work with our final project. We were told to do sketches for the layout like how are we going to place the title and the context together. Mr Vinod encourage us to think outside the box and make use the things that we have learned to create a creative artwork. After completing the sketches, we were told to transfer our idea and work it with Adobe InDesign.

Week 13 (23/06/18)
In the same week, we have an extra class on weekend. Mr Vinod went through our work for final project and gave some feedbacks. I was told that most of my designs are too rigid and I could express it more. Mr Vinod had choose the best two from my works and ask me to explore more for that.

FEEDBACK
Week 10
No feedback given since there was no class this week.
Week 12
No feedback given since there was no class this week.
Week 13
General Feedback : Some of us have named the final project as Project 3, so we were told to make changes for it. For the further reading part, we were reminded again to update every week because it is counted as our research. Other than that, the final outcome of the artworks cannot be a screenshot and we were told export it as JPEG instead of PNG. We also need to be aware of the composition and margins of our artwork. For the final project, we were told that thumbnail sketches should be done quick and fast.
Specific Feedback : Mr Shamsul said that my sketches for the layout is too neat and he asked me not to use ruler when doing sketches. Besides that, Mr Vinod commented one of my sketch is too constructivism and he told me to found out what does the "constructivism" means as I don't know the meaning of it.
Week 14
General Feedback: Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul went through my hardcopy of the work and comment that overall my work is good. I forget to print one of my work and I was told to print it later on.
Specific Feedback: There is a format for the compilation of our final work and we were told to follow it. When compiling the project 1, the book that we have done should be embed PDF in spreads not a single page. For the final project, we were told that we can either choose to mount or just leave it without mount for the final outcome. We can also resize the artwork but make sure it is readable.
REFLECTION
Experiences:
Week 10: This week, I need to work at home because there was a public holiday. I had utilities my time to complete two task which is font design and the essay writing for love and hate. I enjoying the process of designing the font as well as the process to think what I love and what I hate.
Week 12: There was no class this week but we were given a message on facebook to come out with a title for what we love and what we hate. I need to think for my title as well as sketch 3 ideas to express the title.
Week 13: In this week class, I did the sketches for the layout and later on I transfer the ideas and work it with Adobe InDesign. For my sketches, I was told that it was too neat and I should avoid using ruler when doing sketches.
Week 14: This week is the last week of semester 1 and we were required to submit final project as well as e-portfolio. In the class, we framed our final artwork and complete the compilation of all the project in e-portfolio.
Observations: Week 13: In this week class, I did the sketches for the layout and later on I transfer the ideas and work it with Adobe InDesign.
Week 10: Design is a process. I need to do some explorations by trying to design the font with different typeface in order to get more inspiration. For the essay writing task, I need to think of the alignment and the point size of the typeface so that it will look neat.
Week 12: I found out that I did not really understand what to do with this so I have a hard time to think the way of expressing the title.
Week 13: I noticed that not all the ideas that I sketch works when I try digitally on Adobe InDesign. I need to look back at my sketch and see where I can make changes when it doesn't work.
Week 14: I looked at my friends' work and I think everyone did a good job in their final project.
Findings:
Week 10: Consistency is important in designing a font. I have to always be aware of that when doing the font design. Choose a suitable typeface as well as having a good alignment for the essay writing is quite important so the reader can read easily.
Week 12: Title is the part of the paper we usually read first so I think is important for us to express the title well so that people can easily know what are we trying to share in the content.
Week 13: There are many possibilities for the outcome on this project. I need to think creatively and keep exploring with the layout and composition in order to come out with a good artwork.
Week 14: I realised that doing more explorations when designing something is helpful to come out with a better design.

The Fundamental of Typography
By: Gavin Ambrose/ Paul Harris
Types of serif :
Serifs are a key characteristic for identifying a typeface due to the variety of ways in which they have been employed throughout the development of typography. It improve the readability of the text by helping the eye to look from one character to another. Many serif styles reflect the mood of the particular time, with some more ornate or bolder, while others are more discreet and refined. Each type of serif lends a font its own personality, typographic traits and design impact.

Using Counter Spaces as Form :
The space inside and around the shape of a letter is known as counter spaces (often overlooked as design elements). Their shapes can be customised using colour, pattern or texture. The "bulk" of the counter spaces add to the weight off the display and can provide a unique and memorable effect to a piece. Sometimes, counter spaces are known as "negative" spaced. They were there all along, hidden in plain sight.
Fig.2.3: Poster using counter space as form |
Figure 1.3 showed a poster designed using counter space as form. An aggressively broad and linear display typeface provides ideal windows ( counter spaces) that enclose and encapsulate intriguing glimpses of still film frames. Each group of the letters assumes its won chunky shape within a field or gray suggesting the half-light of the theatre.
(Week 13)
Hierarchy Using Position :
The letters that in "primary" locations will receive visual priority. Upper areas are counted as more prominent, the higher it is the better. With respect to horizontal positioning, status have demonstrated that focus groups have slightly preference for the right hand side f the visible area over the left hand side. Assuming all point are in the same size, the higher position indicated a higher Lebel of importance.
Hierarchy Using Size :
The bigger the size, the better it is. The size is a important indicator of hierarchy. A major shift in size can trump position, if the size is big enough. In the image below, The same display type used in the headline is used much smaller in the subhead. From here, I can differentiate the headline and subhead by the size of the letter.
Hierarchy Using Weight :

Fig3.1: Hierarchy in size. |
It said that fatter is more visible. Letters that have a wider stems and stroke widths have a stronger presence on the page. Typographic hierarchy is relative, it depends on how weight versus how big versus how prominently positioned.
Hierarchy Using Colour :
The strong colour will make a piece outstanding. White and black provide the highest level of contrast. A piece of text in a burst of colour can become more stands out in the hierarchy of elements that are present. It depends on other factors like size, weight, typestyle and position. The image below showed that all the letters are in white colour but the hidden message "eat it" is in red colour. The entire joke rests upon the selective use of colour in this poster to "reveal' a hidden message.
The higher contrast will separates background from foreground. The separation can be done using outlines, hard drop shadows and any combination of these effects. When the background is complex, whether an image or typographic texture, we have to be aware to create sufficient contrast between the type and what is behind it. The image below is a poster designed by the designer, Ryan Frease. The "faux" sign in the poster provides a strong background contrast for the text and the designer uses the outlines and drop shadows in an interesting mix of styles to make it stands out.

Typographic Design : Form and Communication (5th edition)
By: Rob Carter, Ben Day & Philip Meggs
Legibility and Colour :
Incorporating color into type significantly affects legibility. We need to consider the appropriate contrast between type and its background when working with type and colour. Black type on white background is considered as most legible. When applied to type, colour should be evaluated in relationship to the conditions in which it is read. For example, we should consider the specific nature of the paper like if the paper is white, is it warm or cool white and the surface of the paper.
All legibility guidelines that related to working with colour and type in print apply also to type appearing on screen. However, we need to consider the conditions of screen resolution and luminescent as well as whether the type is static or in motion. Digital technologies that develop rapidly have also changed the way in which designers use colour and type as it is more easily to assign colour from the palettes that containing millions of colours.
The designers need to be aware for the three basic colour properties of hue, value and saturation to achieve appropriate contrast between type and its background. Hue and tone refers to simply are specific names for colour.Value refers to the lightness and darkness of a colour, and saturation is relative to the brightness of a colour. All colours posses characteristic of hue, value and saturation. When we combine colour and type, balancing all these properties is a critical legibility concern. We will also need to consider the type size when planning the colour. At the smaller size, type requires backgrounds that are significantly different in hue or value.
