LECTURE
Lecture 1 : Introduction to the Module
07/01/19 (Week 1)
In the first class, we were introduced to the module outline as well as the projects that we need to be done for this module. Also, we were given a short brief about our field trip in the upcoming weeks.
12/01/19 (Week 1)
Today, we were instructed to prepare for next week lecture by watching two videos and answering the questions provided in Google Classroom.
Video 1 :
Modern Technology & The Loss of Traditional.
Questions :
1. Do you think modern technology can assist you in learning about traditional culture?
Answer : Modern technology has been developed over the years and it does impact many aspects of our life. The invention like Internet allow us to get access to relevant information at any time and anywhere. Also, with the smart gadgets like smartphone, tablets and desktop, we can actually access the internet to find the information including cultural identity, ancient societies and more whenever we need. Hence, modern technology is said to helpful for us in learning about our traditional culture.
2. How do you include, utilise and manipulate modern technology into this module and project to benefit your learning of culture, and expressing it in design?
Answer : In the first stage of our project, we were required to do a lot of readings and research to get more informations. Thus, modern technology could simplify the way we get information by accessing to Google and Wikipedia. At the same time, we could also find some visual references to have a better idea on the background research and what we can expected to be found at the location.
Video 2 :
Jacques Derrida Philosophy.
Questions :
1. How do new media and old media apply to your study?
Answer : New media refers to the mass technology including social networking sites, website advertisements, blog and more that are using different forms of electronic communication. While, old media refers to the mediums that are exist before the arrival of internet which include print media, television and radio. New media can be apply to the study by researching the relevant information through Google and document our progress in the blog. As for the old media, we can read some books to get the information that is needed.
2. How do traditional culture and modern culture co-exist? Discuss this in the context of Malaysia, and if you like, Korea/Japan too.
Answer : Traditional culture is the cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs and institutions that transferred from one generation to another whereas modern culture refers to the current beliefs, taste, ideas and perceptions of the society. Both traditional and modern culture could be coexist as they function similarly by sharing the same ways of thinking among the people.
Lecture 2 : Traditional vs New Media Culture
14/01/19 (Week 2)
In the previous week, two videos were provided with the questions in Google classroom and we were required to complete it as the preparation for this week lecture. While in this week class, we were told to discuss our answers in group and made a presentation slide for it.

INSTRUCTIONS
PROJECT 1
Proposal (Week 1 - Week 2)
Week 1 (07/01/19)
This week, we were given a brief about this module and the breakdown of the projects in detail. From the briefing, we got to know that there will be three projects to be done for this module. As for the first part, we were required to propose what we want to do during the field trip to Korea with a 200 word write-up defining and interpreting the theme of "Living with Nature" in relation to their culture. This project needs to be done in group and I have grouped up with Jessica and Xin Yi.
Before the class end, we got to sit together and discuss about the ideas. We started to list down the aspects of Korean culture and get some inspirations from there.
Week 1 (08/01/19 - 10/01/19)
Before the next class, we got to discuss remotely from home. We started it by conducting our own research and share our findings with each other through online. Later on, we create a slide and compile everything we got for our ideas. At this time, we came up with six different aspects of Korean culture that we can look into which are Hanji, Minhwa, Hanbok, Korean traditional embroidery, beauty products and their architecture.
Here is the first draft of our ideas below :

Week 1 (11/01/19)
Today, we got to have a consultation with both our lecturers to get some feedbacks from them. While waiting the turn to consult, my group mates and I made use of the time to do further research on our ideas.
In the class, Ms Jinchi also mentioned that we should write out our definition and interpretation of living with nature first before coming up with the ideas and aspects of the Korean culture. We need to think about the theme and how we want to to interpret it. Later on, use it to further develop and think for the preliminary ideas. As for my group, we jump straight to the ides first instead of coming up with our own interpretation on the theme. Hence, we decided to think on the meaning that we want to interpret for the theme first before finalising our ideas.
Since we are still confused how we could interpret the meaning for the theme, we also got to consult with Mr Charles in the class. We share what we have done so far and get some feedbacks from him. He told us that it does not need to be directly relate to plants or trees, it can be other things as well. He gave us some examples what nature could be which encourages us to think outside the box.
Week 1 (12/01/19 - 13/01/19)
During weekends, we continue our discussion through online as we did not come up the interpretation yet. Just like usual, we doing our own research first and then share it with each others. From the discussion, we all agreed to interpret the meaning of "living with nature" to be surrounding ourselves with the natural elements of the universe through five traditional colours as well as the motifs of Korea's culture for a colourful and meaningful lifestyle. Since all these elements are widely used in their country, we thought to study how Korean traditional colours and motifs are being applied.

Week 2 (14/01/19 - 17/01/19)
There will be a presentation on Friday. Therefore, we made use our time to further discuss on our proposal. In Google Classroom, Ms Jinchi also explained the requirements for all our projects again since some of us are still confused. From there, my group members and I got to understand what we are doing better than before and we somehow know what to do for the preliminary ideas. At this time, we also manage to further elaborate our problem questions and objectives.

Week 2 (18/01/19)
In today's class, we will need to deliver a presentation on our proposal and here is our presentation slides below.

FEEDBACK
Week 1 : In the class, Ms Jinchi told us that we should write out our definition and interpretation of living with nature first instead of coming up with the ideas and aspects of the Korean culture. We need to think about the theme and how we want to interpret it. Then, use it as a guide to further develop it and think for the preliminary ideas. While my group consulting with Mr Charles, we also got the feedback that to have a creative thinking of what nature means as it could be anything.
Week 2 : For my group presentation, Mr Charles said that our proposal was good and it does contain what he expected to be included in the slides. Also, he said it is good that we listed out our problem questions and thinking the five ideas based on that. Other than that, he suggested us to look into textures as part of our research as well.
REFLECTION
Experiences :
Week 1 : In this week class, we were given a brief about all of our projects as well as the tasks that need be done by this week. My group members and I got to share our ideas and findings with each other after conducting our own research. From there, we manage to come up with six different aspects of Korean culture. However, we were told that we should write out our interpretation on the theme first instead of the ideas.
Week 2 : This week, we were require to give a presentation on our proposal. Hence, my group members and I were busy to do further research as to prepare for the presentation slides. While for the presentation, I feel bad that I didn't present well as I'm nervous to be the first group to present.
Observations :
Week 1 : I noticed that it was a bit hard for us to start when we are confused with the outlines. While from the consultation, Mr Charles got to share some examples of how we could interpret the theme and I realised there are actually lots of things that I can relate it back to the nature.
Week 2 : I observed that the use of traditional colours and motifs on the Korean design got to reflect their culture better and they actually applied it in their daily life from the clothing, art, food to the architecture.
Findings :
Week 1 : I found that we can actually interpret the word "nature" in other terms instead of plants and trees, it could be other thing as well. I should also start to think outside the box in order while thinking for the interpretation.
Week 2 : I'm always interested in Korean's culture but I didn't realised there are five colours that represent five cardinal directions, seasons and also the five elements of traditional Korean culture. Through the process of researching, I manage to read and understand more about their colours and how they applied them to their daily life.
